“Unbroken” was commissioned by Dr. Lorrie Berkshire Brown as part of her program, A Bruised Reed. The piece was premiered at the 2024 International Double Reed Society Conference in Flagstaff, Arizona. Inspired by Isaiah 42:3-5, “Unbroken” is divided into three continuous movements: I. A bruised reed he will not break, II. He will not grow dim or be bruised, and III. Thus says God, the Lord. The first movement opens with a lilting melody and features a shifting measure of 2/8 time that creates a sense of uneasiness. The second movement follows, rushing along with tumultuous lines that feel as though the music might come undone. The third movement concludes the work with joyous expressions and a reflective return to the opening theme. “Unbroken” conveys the idea that though we may be pushed to our limits, our breaking point, it is still possible to find the strength to endure and triumph.
